A place of citizenship
(30 min. excerpt from 2h performance)
film, Reina Sofia National Museum, Madrid, 2009

A Place of Citizenship documents a collaborative performance with twelve Romanian street musicians living in Madrid. After several exploratory workshops the musicians then led a performance at the National Museum Reina Sofia; following a creative structure negotiated during the previous rehearsal workshops.
During the performance an anthem was created “on the spot” through collaborative negotiations with the participating audience. The process encouraged the public to suggest words, phrases, ideas and sounds that might be included in a national anthem. A link between the Spanish audience and the Romanian performers was established wherein the composing of a new national anthem for Romania was ultimately transformed into the “anthem of the audience”; reflecting the politics of the room.

The first word chosen by an audience member was: gitano/gypsy.
